Spotless Minds

I thought about posting of this since I stumbled upon it more than a while ago on Square America , then I've forgotten it, I've re-stumbled upon it again and so on since today...

The Eternal Sunshine of Fred & Anne is one of my favorite sections of the site. Square America is full of gorgeous old pictures, like the ones of people in photobooths I've already wrote about , but with Fred and Anne is all about a bizzarre story of feelings more than beautiful images...

Their story begins when three photo albums are found in a flea market in Wisconsin. The first two albums date 1914-1920 circa and chronicle school days and college years of, respectively, a young man named Fred, from Spirit Lake, Iowa and of a girl named Anne.

The subject of these albums is typical and they are artfully put together, still there is something strange...

A lot of pictures had faces rudely and methodically cut or scratched out and they happen to be all female faces in Fred's album and male faces in Anne's album...in her case it looked like all the photos removed are of the same man, a certain "Cas from Canada".

At the end of the second album, we learn that Fred and Anne had begun dating...

Are you waiting to know what's in the third album and if they had lived happily ever after? Go here and read what happened then!

But beyond this, I'm sure you're all wondering about the same things:

"did they agree to go through their own or each other's albums and remove any photos of old flames? Did one or the other do it on their own? If so, did they do it laughingly after a few glasses of wine or bitterly after an argument? And did it acheive it's desired effect- did Fred never again think about Delia or Gladys, did Anne forget Cas? These albums remind us of how potent our relationship to photographs can be, how fully they embody and encapsulate our past. Who hasn't felt the perverse (or perhaps not so perverse) thrill of ripping up or throwing away a photo of an old lover. What's amazing about these albums is that they no longer contain a record of a former love but of the moment that love became something else, something they no longer felt they could live with."

Countdown To The Jamboree

The countdown to the 10th edition of the Summer Jamboree is starting and hopefully this year I will be able to do a more extensive coverage of the event. Meanwhile, during the upcoming weeks, you can expect several posts about 50s culture, fashion and all in between...

First of all here's a little (surely non-exhaustive) list of 50s/rockabilly festivals around the world:

Screamin Festival
Barcelona, Spain. June.
Walldorf Rock-n-Roll Weekender
Walldorf, Germany, May/June.
Greazfest
Brisbane, Australia, July 31-August 2 2009.
Red, Hot & Blue
St. Hyacinthe, QC, Canada. September 3-6 2009.

Le Cirque Is Coming

Road trips, metropolitan background and carnival are probably the most (ab)used themes for fashion editorials. It's an easy/lazy choice. You know I love carnival atmosphere though...fun, colorful...

And judging by this lookbook some of the pieces from the new Forever21 collection, Cirque 21, are quite likeable too. Stripes? Polka dots? I want them!

The collection will be available from July 29th in limited quantity...

I'm Really Into This

During the last months I developed a true obsession for She & Him. Really, I can't help to listen to their songs every day!

Zooey Deschanel is notoriously adorable

her movies are almost always pretty

but she's a good singer and a sweet, retro songs writer too

I can't wait for their second album!

Red & Turquoise

Days ago I read this post on Christina's blog and it was so inspirational that I decided to build an outfit around these two colors: turquoise and red.

I like color block effects and quite unexpectly this two shades work fine together, so juicy and fun!

I handsewn the skirt and the leotard is from American Apparel. It come in red, but when I bought mine it was out of stock, so I decided to buy it in white, trying with a DIY dye . It ended looking better than expected: not a bloody red but a nice coral/orange shade.

And the deep scoop back is so nice and refreshing!!

Summer Days, Fall Look Books

With 30+ Celsius degrees indoor, I strongly refuse to look at fall look books and collections if wool, heavy coats and/or tights are involved.
But if it's all about feminine dresses, messy prints and just a good amount of sequins, than it's ok for me, so I suppose it will be safe to post some pictures of Brian Reyes new collection here.

They say that:

"the Fall 09 collection emits the strength and natural beauty of stone, marble and bronze. Feminine silhouettes and clean lines draped in custom prints show dimension and texture to every silhouette. Asymmetrical ruffle skirts provide movement on the body while slim silhouettes provide shape and inspire glamor - a "snakeskin" lace that hugs the form. Marble prints mimic a miniature mosaic creating a spectrum of art and beauty that draws the eye. The overall look is polished; save for the back detail cutouts that provide a flirtatious feel."

The Spring/Summer 2010 collection will be presented on September 15th at 11am in the Tent complex at Bryant Park during New York fashion week. Meanwhile Brian Reyes is gearing an online sale in conjunction with the Gilt Group. It will be like an end of season/ sample sale like the ones that traditionally are only available to people living in the New York area, with the best of Reyes past collections. The sale is scheduled for July 20th (Monday) and will last only 36 hours. The shoot for the sale was styled by American Vogue's Contributing Editor Lauren Santo Domingo.
The site is by invitation only, so if you're interested you may set an account here .
